Bali is a paradise for adventure seekers, and there's no better way to discover its beauty than by motorbike. While it's easy to grab a taxi or jump on the back of a Gojek motorbike, there's no better feeling of freedom than to cruise around yourself. Plus, navigating through Bali's traffic (which especially around Canggu, Seminyak and the road up to The Bukit can be madness) is much easier and faster on a motorbike, allowing you to make the most of your time on the island.

What motorbike do I need in Bali?
Be mindful of choosing the right motorbike or scooter in Bali. The most common motorbikes are Honda Vario's. Easy and perfect for either short or long distances. If you're driving short distances only, a Scoopy is comfortable as well (usually the cheapest option). A bit heavier bike, also nice if you're cruising around with kids is the Nmax. For the stylish traveler, you can also rent Vespa's in Bali here.
TIP: Planning to surf? Request a surf rack on your motorbike.
Rather go for a more sustainable option? We are big fans of the new electric motorbikes. It's noise free and you'll be supporting Bali by driving without any emmissions. You'll see them on the island more and more, which is amazing!
You can rent an electric motorbike in Bali at Skute. Planning to buy one? Go to the Edde Indonesia in Balistore on Jalan Pererenan (take a test drive, you'll fall in love!). Make sure to mention Welikebali since we're actively aiming to have as many of you choosing to drive electric!

Tips for renting a motorbike in Bali
Before you jump on the bike and start cruising around the island, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:
Check the condition: Inspect the motorbike, paying close attention to brakes, tires, lights, and indicators. Make sure everything is in good working order to avoid any issues during your trip.
International Drivers License: You'll need a valid international driving license or a local Indonesian license to rent a motorbike in Bali. Make sure to carry your license and other necessary documents with you at all times.
TIP: you can arrange your international drivers license for Bali online! You can get it here > International Drivers Association
Negotiate the price: Rental rates can vary depending on the duration of your rental and the type of motorbike you choose. Don't hesitate to negotiate the price (however: just to get an honest price, not lower than usual!), especially if you're renting for a longer period like one month or more.
Wear a helmet: Safety should always come first! Be sure to wear a helmet at all times while riding a motorbike in Bali, as accidents can happen anywhere, especially on busy roads or evenings. And although you'll see a lot of people (especially around Canggu) drive without a helmet, we absolutely recommend that you do it anyway because your safety is just simply not something you'd want to risk! We always wear it - and have been in small accidents in the past 15 years and even if it was a small one we sure were happy we were wearing out helmets! Plus: you can get a fine by the police when not wearing it.
Check your insurance: Check your travel insurance if it covers motorbike accidents and injuries. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when exploring lots around the island with the motorbike.
Follow the rules: Familiarize yourself with Bali's traffic rules and regulations before hitting the road. Stick to the speed limits, use turn signals, and be mindful of other road users to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Also, pay on time and be kind at all times to the people servicing you.
What about the 'new' Bali motorbike ban?
Last year, there have been discussions and initiatives aimed at improving road safety in Bali, including restrictions on motorbike rentals for tourists. However, don't worry, this rule hasn't been executed so you can rent a motorbike and cruise around in Bali!
